Chișinău is the capital, the largest city and the main administrative, territorial, economic, scientific and cultural centre of the Republic of Moldova. As an administrative unit, it has the special status of a municipality, headed by a general mayor and a municipal council. The city proper is organised into five sectors — Botanica, Buiucani, Centru, Ciocana and Rîșcani — to which are added numerous constituent towns and villages in the suburban area, which together make up the municipality.
Geography
The municipality extends over an area of about 572 km², on the south-eastern edge of the Central Moldavian Plateau. The city is crossed by the river Bîc, a right-bank tributary of the Dniester, in whose valley it developed over the centuries. The hilly relief, alternating hills and valleys, together with the extensive parks — among them Valea Morilor lake and the "Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt" Public Garden — give it the image of a green city, with numerous recreation areas.
Population and economy
According to the 2024 census, the municipality of Chișinău numbered more than 720,000 inhabitants, concentrating the greater part of the country's urban population. It is home to the seats of the main state institutions — Parliament, the Government, the Presidency — as well as universities, research institutes and the greater part of Moldova's economic activity, from the food, light and chemical industries to services, trade, construction and information technology, sectors that make the capital the economic engine of the entire country.
History
The first documentary attestation of Chișinău dates from 17 July 1436, when the settlement is mentioned in a princely charter. From a modest market town, the settlement grew gradually, becoming in the 19th century the capital of the Bessarabia Governorate of the Russian Empire, then, in the interwar period, an important city of Greater Romania, and from 1940 the capital of the Soviet republic, and, from 1991, of the independent Republic of Moldova.
Heritage and monuments
The heart of the city is Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt Boulevard, the main axis along which historic buildings, institutions, theatres and parks are strung. The "Nativity of the Lord" Cathedral, with its bell tower, and the Triumphal Arch form the central ensemble, a symbol of the capital. To these are added the statue of Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt, at the entrance to the Public Garden, and numerous museums, theatres and monuments that make Chișinău the main urban and spiritual landmark of Moldova.

Sensorica — Immersive Experience Museum
Sensorica, at 5 Strada Tiraspol, is Chișinău's immersive art museum — a space where the display works through projections and a built environment rather than glass cases. It sits about two kilometres south-east of the centre. Opening hours: closed Monday, Tuesday to Friday 13:00–20:00, Saturday and Sunday 11:00–21:00. Parking is free, both in its own car park and on the street, and there is wheelchair-accessible entry and parking. It suits children — a useful indoor alternative for rainy days.

Scara Cascadelor (the Cascade Stairway)
Scara Cascadelor is the monumental stepped descent linking the city with the lake in Parcul „Valea Morilor”, about one and a half kilometres west of Piața Marii Adunări Naționale. It is classified as a monument and a tourist attraction. Access is free, round the clock, every day. It is probably the best pedestrian viewpoint in Chișinău: from the top you see the whole valley and the lake. The area is suitable for children, but bear in mind that this is a long staircase — it is not accessible with a pushchair or a wheelchair.

Teatrul Dramatic de Stat pentru Tineret „Pe Strada Trandafirilor Iurie Harmelin” is at 19/3 Strada Cuza Vodă, in southern Chișinău, roughly five kilometres from Piața Marii Adunări Naționale. Parcul „Dendrariu”
