Scara Cascadelor (the Cascade Stairway)

What it is

The Cascade Stairway solves a problem of terrain and, at the same time, creates the best visual setting in the capital. The ground drops steeply from the city towards the valley holding the lake, and the monumental steps make the vertical connection.

It is officially classified as a monument and a tourist attraction, not merely as pedestrian infrastructure. The reason is obvious when you reach the top: from there the full view opens over Parcul „Valea Morilor”, the lake and the far shore.

How to walk it

The right direction is top to bottom. You start at the high end, with the full view in front of you, then descend gradually towards water level. Climbing back the other way is real effort — a long staircase remains a long staircase.

The descent takes a few minutes, but it is worth doing with stops: the view changes at every landing. It is the most photographed pedestrian route in the city, especially at sunset.

Accessibility — a warning

Being a monumental staircase, there is no accessible alternative on this route. With a pushchair, a wheelchair or reduced mobility, use the side entrances to the park from Strada Grigore Alexandrescu, where access is adapted.

The area is listed as suitable for children, but with supervision — the steps are numerous and can be slippery in damp weather.

When to go

At sunset, for the light. Early in the morning, for photographs without people. In autumn, when the colour in the valley changes the picture entirely.

In winter and after rain, the steps become slippery. Wear shoes with grip, not city shoes.

Getting there and what to combine it with

From Piața Marii Adunări Naționale, about one and a half kilometres westwards — 20 minutes on foot. The classic route takes you through the centre, then down towards the valley.

The best half-day in Chișinău looks like this: Parcul „Dendrariu” in the morning, the descent down the Cascade Stairway, a circuit of the lake in Valea Morilor and back to the centre along Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard. All on foot, no taxi.
