What you'll see

The cathedral is the seat of the capital's Roman Catholic community and its point of reference. The street frontage is understated, and the interior is kept simple: a tall volume, plenty of light, decoration reduced to essentials. For a visitor who has already seen the Orthodox cathedral in the centre, the contrast is the interesting part of the stop — two different liturgical traditions a few hundred metres apart, in the same city.

This is not a sight that demands much time. A quarter of an hour is enough, and if you happen to arrive during a service it is worth staying at the back for a few minutes and not taking photographs. Getting there

The address is 85 Strada Mitropolit Dosoftei, in the city centre, north-west of Piața Marii Adunări Naționale. From the Triumphal Arch it is under ten minutes on foot, and from Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard it is two streets uphill. The entrance is marked as wheelchair-accessible. Parking in the area is on-street and limited during working hours.

When to go

The church is open every day from 07:00 in the morning until 22:00 at night, which makes it one of the few sights in the centre you can visit very early or after dinner. In the morning and mid-afternoon the interior is empty and quiet. On Sundays and Catholic feast days the schedule is dominated by services, so a sightseeing visit is better made on other days.

What to combine it with

Its central position puts it on the same route as almost everything worth seeing in Chișinău in a day. A few minutes' walk away are the Grădina Publică „Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt”, the Ștefan cel Mare monument, the National Art Museum of Moldova and the row of museums on Strada 31 August 1989. The Aleksandr Pushkin House Museum lies a little further north and rounds off the same walk nicely.
