Parcul „Valea Morilor”

Why it is Chișinău's most important park

There is a reason Valea Morilor comes up in any conversation about Moldova's capital: it is the one place in the city where the terrain works in the landscape's favour. The ground falls away from the centre towards a broad lake, and the layout follows that slope — from above you see the water, from below you see the city rising.

The park has everything it needs: waterside paths, an open-air theatre, a playground and a small amusement park. The atmosphere stays calm even at weekends, because the grounds are large enough to absorb the crowds.

What to do there

The circuit of the lake is the basic route. You walk it at an easy pace, with stops on benches and shifting views towards the far shore. Runners use it morning and evening.

The open-air theatre hosts events in the warmer months. The playground and the small amusement park take care of the family side. People gather on the landscaped banks at sunset — the best time for photographs.

Getting there

Grigore Alexandrescu Street, about a kilometre and a half south-west of Piața Marii Adunări Naționale. It is a 20–25 minute walk from the centre, and the most striking way in is from above, down the Cascade Staircase — the monumental flight of steps linking the city to the valley.

The park is open 24 hours a day, every day. The entrance is wheelchair accessible and there is accessible parking. The waterside paths are the easiest going; the sloping stretches take some effort.

When to go

Sunset, no argument. The light falls on the water and the opposite bank, and the park fills with people out for a walk. Early morning is the opposite: complete quiet and empty paths.

In summer, the banks are the coolest spots in the city centre. Autumn brings the colour. In winter the lake partly freezes and the landscape becomes something else entirely.

What to combine it with

The classic half-day route: Parcul „Dendrariu” in the morning, down the Cascade Staircase, then round the lake here. All three are west of the centre, within walking distance of each other.

Heading back towards Parcul Catedralei and Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard closes the loop. For dinner, the restaurants in the centre are a few minutes away, and if you want to extend the day with a tasting, the wineries and wines section covers the vineyards on the edge of the capital.
