What you'll see

This is the capital's only open-air museum and the best place in Chișinău to see what Moldovan vernacular architecture looked like before urbanisation: peasant houses, farm outbuildings and, as the centrepiece, a wooden church built in the 17th century. The buildings sit on planted grounds with paths running between them, which turns the visit into a walk of about an hour and a half.

Unlike the indoor displays in the centre, here the objects are full-scale and you can go inside them. For anyone who has already seen the ethnography section of the national museum, this is the logical continuation. The theme is developed in the traditions and culture section.

Getting there

The address is Aeroportului Street, in southern Chișinău, roughly twenty minutes by car from Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt Boulevard. It is not somewhere you walk to from the centre, nor is it on the usual tourist transport routes, so it is worth planning. Check the exact location before setting off.

When to go

Hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00, with Monday the closing day. Closing at 17:00 means it cannot be the last stop of a long day. Since the museum is entirely outdoors, the weather decides the quality of the visit: May–June and September–October are the best periods, and morning is the quietest window.

What to combine it with

It is in the same part of the city as the Botanical Garden and the Zoo, a few minutes away. A day built around these three points covers the whole southern half of the capital and works very well with family, with plenty of time spent outdoors.
