Grădina Botanică din Chișinău (Chișinău Botanical Garden)

What you'll see

This is the largest botanical site in the country, with a collection numbering around ten thousand species, divided into themed sections: a rosarium, tree and shrub collections, glasshouses, plus bodies of water within the grounds. It cannot be done in thirty minutes — an honest circuit takes two hours, and longer if you follow the side paths.

The difference from the urban parks in the centre is that the planting here is organised scientifically, with labels and groupings by family, rather than purely decoratively. For anyone interested in the region's vegetation, it is the place in Chișinău with the highest density of information. The country's other green destinations are in the nature section.

Getting there

The address is 18 Pădurii Street, in the south of the capital, about twenty minutes by car from Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard. It can also be reached by public transport, but the journey is longer. The main entrance is listed as wheelchair accessible; the internal paths are long, however, so it is worth pacing your route. Check the location on the map.

When to go

Opening at 06:00 every day is a real advantage: early in the morning the garden is empty and cool. Closing times vary — Monday at 18:00, Tuesday to Saturday at 21:00, Sunday at 20:00 — so midweek you can stay into the evening. The most striking periods are late spring, when the collections are in flower, and the first half of October, for the colour of the trees.

What to combine it with

It is in the same southern half of the city as the Zoo and Muzeul Satului, both a few minutes away. A day built around these three points works perfectly for families and avoids the traffic in the centre entirely. Grădina Publică Sarmizegetusa is also in the area, if you want a short break between them.
