Eugen Doga

A composer of world renown, author of hundreds of symphonic, film and ballet works. His famous waltz is regarded as one of the most beautiful pieces of music of the 20th century, and his output placed Moldova on the map of world music.

Eugen Doga (b. 1 March 1937, Mocra, Râbnița district – d. 3 June 2025) was the best-known composer of the Republic of Moldova and one of the most important musical figures of the former Soviet and European space. His work, of impressive scope, includes ballets, an opera, more than 100 instrumental and choral works, symphonies, quartets, religious music, over 200 film scores, more than 260 songs and romances, and over 70 waltzes.

Career

After graduating from the Chișinău Conservatory, Eugen Doga worked as a cellist in Moldova's television and radio orchestra (1957–1962), taught at the „Ștefan Neaga” Music College in Chișinău (1962–1967) and later worked at the Ministry of Culture. His collaboration with the director Emil Loteanu, which began with the film „Lăutarii” (The Fiddlers), gave rise to some of the finest pages of film music.

The waltz of the century

His most celebrated creation remains the waltz from the film „Gingașa și tandra mea fiară” (My Sweet and Tender Beast), written, according to legend, in just a few minutes. The work was included by UNESCO among the musical masterpieces of the 20th century and is considered the summit of his art. The melody travelled around the world and became a symbol of Moldovan music.

Legacy

From 1992, Eugen Doga was a full member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. Throughout his life he was awarded numerous orders and titles by six presidents, from the Soviet leaders to the presidents of the Republic of Moldova and of Romania. On his death in June 2025, at the age of 88, the Republic of Moldova declared a day of national mourning, paying tribute to a creator whose music transcended the boundaries of time and of his own country.

An ambassador of Moldovan music

Over more than six decades of creative work, Eugen Doga turned Moldovan music into a name recognised on the international stage. His waltzes, romances and film scores have been performed by orchestras and soloists from every continent. He gave concerts in the world's great capitals, and his melodies accompanied entire generations. Through the breadth and refinement of his work, Doga remains the most important composer the Republic of Moldova has produced, and his death in 2025 was felt as a national loss.
