Nicolae Testemițanu
Medic și organizator al sănătății · 1927–1986
Surgeon, hygienist and organizer of public health care. He campaigned for rural people's access to medical services. The State University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Chișinău bears his name.
Nicolae Testemițanu (b. 1 August 1927, Ochiul Alb, Bălți county – d. 20 September 1986) was a renowned surgeon, scholar, professor and statesman, a reformer of higher medical education and of the national health system of Moldova. A notable figure of Moldovan medicine, he profoundly shaped the organization of health care in the republic.
Career
In 1951 he graduated from the State Institute of Medicine in Chișinău, then began his training in general surgery and worked as a physician. He gradually rose through the academic hierarchy, from assistant to head of department. In 1958 he defended his doctoral thesis in medical sciences, and a year later, at only 32, he was appointed rector of the State Institute of Medicine in Chișinău. During his mandate he opened the faculties of Dentistry (1959), Advanced Training of Physicians (1962), Preventive Medicine (1963) and Pharmacy (1964), doubling the number of students and responding to the acute need for medical personnel.
The reformer
In 1963 he was appointed Minister of Health, a position from which he developed strategies for strengthening the medical system, ensuring qualified staff and improving medical assistance. He campaigned for staffing the health system with local physicians and for introducing the Romanian language into the educational process — a position that led to his dismissal from the post of minister in 1968.
Legacy
He published more than 220 scientific works, including monographs devoted to the organization of health care and to the history of medicine. His concept regarding specialized medical assistance for the rural population was awarded the State Prize. Since 1990, the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova has borne his name, in recognition of his fundamental contribution to national medicine.
A reformer of medicine
Nicolae Testemițanu remained in the history of Moldovan medicine as a visionary who laid the foundations of modern medical assistance in the republic, especially for the rural population. His concept of bringing specialized medical services closer to the village was recognized and applied beyond Moldova's borders. Dismissed for his national convictions, he continued to train physicians and to publish reference works. The State University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Chișinău, which has borne his name since 1990, perpetuates the memory of the most important organizer of health care in Moldova.
