Orhei district lies in the centre of the Republic of Moldova, in the Centre Development Region. Its seat is the municipality of Orhei, one of the country's oldest and most important towns. The district borders several districts in central Moldova, occupying a position as a link between the capital and the north of the country, crossed by important roads.
Geography and relief
With an area of approximately 1,228 km², the district is one of the largest in the central area. The relief is hilly, typical of the Central Moldavian Plateau, crossed by the river Răut and its tributaries, which over time have carved spectacular valleys with steep limestone banks and deep meanders. Fertile soils and a temperate continental climate favour agriculture, and population density is about 65 inhabitants/km².
Population and economy
The district has around 79,000 inhabitants, the population being predominantly of Moldovan/Romanian ethnicity (over 93%), with Ukrainian, Russian, Roma, Gagauz and Bulgarian minorities. The district includes a single town and dozens of communes and villages. The economy is based on agriculture, viticulture, fruit growing and the food industry, while the town of Orhei is also a regional industrial, commercial and cultural centre.
Heritage and tourism
Orhei holds some of the most valuable tourist and archaeological sites in Moldova. The Orheiul Vechi complex, located near the villages of Trebujeni and Butuceni in a meander of the Răut, brings together Getic, Golden Horde and Principality of Moldavia remains, cave churches carved into the rock and a unique natural landscape; it is one of the country's best-known monuments and a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. Curchi Monastery, in the commune of Vatici, is one of the most imposing monastic ensembles in Moldova, with remarkable architecture. At Ivancea stands the Balioz family manor, with its arboretum park, which today houses a museum. The town of Orhei itself has a long history, attested as early as the Middle Ages, and its centre preserves heritage buildings and churches. All of this makes the district one of the most visited tourist and cultural destinations in the Republic of Moldova. The district, in its modern form, was established in November 1940 and has undergone several administrative reorganisations over time.
