An important agro-industrial district in northern Moldova, known for its sugar beet crops and processing plants.

Drochia district lies in the northern part of the Republic of Moldova and is part of the North Development Region. Its seat is the town of Drochia, an important agro-industrial centre of the country's north. The territory borders the districts of Soroca, Florești, Sângerei, Râșcani, Edineț and Dondușeni, being situated in the heart of the fertile chernozem zone of northern Moldova.

Geography

The relief is a hilly plain, part of the Northern Moldavian Plateau, with particularly fertile chernozem soils. The district covers approximately 1,000 km², and according to the 2014 census the population was about 74,443 inhabitants, with a density of approximately 74 inhabitants per km². The population has declined considerably compared with the Soviet period. The ethnic composition is majority Moldovan/Romanian, with a large Ukrainian community and a Russian minority.

Economy

The district's economy is strongly agricultural and agro-industrial. The fertile soils favour the cultivation of sugar beet, cereals (wheat, maize, barley), sunflower and industrial crops. A major historical role was played by the sugar factory at Drochia, one of the largest enterprises of its kind in the country, around which local industry developed. Agri-food processing, livestock breeding and trade complete the district's economy.

What to see

Drochia district is linked to notable figures of Romanian culture, among them the writer and anti-communist dissident Ion Moraru, a native of the village of Mîndîc and a member of the group "Sabia Dreptății". The villages preserve old churches and manor houses, and the extensive agricultural landscapes are representative of northern Moldova.

History

The settlement of Drochia developed as an important railway junction and centre for processing the agricultural output of northern Bessarabia. In the interwar period the territory belonged to Romania, within Soroca County, and after 1944 it was integrated into the Moldavian SSR, when it underwent strong industrialisation linked to the sugar factory. The district has also produced other cultural figures, connected to its villages in northern Bessarabia. Through its tradition in sugar beet cultivation, its agri-food industry and its cultural heritage, Drochia district remains one of the country's most productive rural territories.
