A district in the far north of the country. Țaul is home to the largest arboretum in Moldova, laid out at the beginning of the 20th century, with tree species from all over the world. Around it, orchards and farmland.
Dondușeni district is located in the northern part of the Republic of Moldova and is part of the North Development Region. Its seat is the town of Dondușeni, the district's only town. The territory borders the districts of northern Moldova, among them Ocnița, Edineț, Soroca, Drochia and Briceni, and is one of the smaller districts, but with exceptionally fertile soils.
Geography
The relief is a plateau, with altitudes of about 247 metres, dissected by valleys with wooded slopes, in the area of the rich chernozems of northern Moldova. The district covers approximately 644 km², and the population, according to the 2014 census, was around 37,856 inhabitants, with a density of about 59 inhabitants per km². The district is experiencing a marked demographic decline, the population having fallen appreciably in recent decades.
Economy
The district's economy is predominantly agricultural. The main branches are the cultivation of cereals and industrial crops (sugar beet, sunflower) and viticulture, favoured by the fertile soils. Fruit growing and the processing of agri-food products complete the area's economic profile.
What to see
The district's best-known site is Țaul Park in the village of the same name, extending over about 46 hectares and considered the largest arboretum in the Republic of Moldova, with more than 150 species of trees and shrubs, laid out at the beginning of the 20th century. Țaul also preserves the Pommer manor, a neoclassical building from the interwar period. The district's villages preserve old churches and rural traditions.
History
The settlement of Dondușeni developed above all with the construction of the railway in northern Bessarabia, which stimulated trade in cereals and agricultural produce. In the interwar period the territory belonged to Romania, within Soroca county, and after 1944 it was incorporated into the Moldavian SSR. The district in its present form was established following the administrative-territorial reform of 2003. The exceptionally fertile chernozem soils have always made the area a prosperous agricultural territory. Through its unique arboretum, its interwar heritage and its fertile soils, Dondușeni district combines natural value with the agricultural vocation of northern Moldova.
