Anenii Noi District

Anenii Noi district lies in the south-central part of the Republic of Moldova and is part of the Centre Development Region. The district seat is the town of Anenii Noi, situated a short distance from the capital Chișinău, which makes the district one of the areas with close economic ties to the municipality. The territory borders the municipality of Chișinău and the districts of Strășeni, Criuleni, Căușeni and Ialoveni, and to the east it adjoins, along the Dniester, the Transnistrian region.

Geography

The relief is predominantly hilly plain, with valleys and gullies shaped by erosion processes, part of the Southern Moldavian Plain. The eastern border is formed by the Dniester river, which runs through the district for about 68 km, while the river Bîc crosses it for approximately 42 km. These waters, together with the chernozem soils, provide favourable conditions for agriculture. According to 2024 data, the district's population was about 57,687 inhabitants, and the area is approximately 887 km², with a density of about 64 inhabitants per km². The ethnic composition is mostly Moldovan/Romanian, with significant Ukrainian and Russian communities.

Economy

The district's economy is predominantly agricultural. Cereals (wheat, maize, barley), sunflower, sugar beet, vegetables and fruit trees are grown, and viticulture holds an important place. Proximity to Chișinău has stimulated the development of the food industry, logistics warehouses and processing enterprises. An emblematic site is the manor and winery of the Mimi family at Bulboaca, one of the best-known wine estates in Moldova, restored and turned into a tourist complex.

What to see

Among the district's attractions are Castel Mimi at Bulboaca, the Ianovski manor and the "Șerpeni Bridgehead" Memorial Complex, raised in memory of the Second World War battles on the bank of the Dniester. Numerous villages preserve old churches and craft traditions.

History

The district's settlements are documented as far back as the medieval period, the territory being part of the historical lands of Moldavia and, later, of the Bessarabia Governorate within the Russian Empire. In the interwar period the area belonged to Romania, within Tighina County, and after 1944 it was incorporated into the Moldavian SSR. The district in its current form was reorganised following the administrative-territorial reform, the bank of the Dniester in this area having witnessed some of the heaviest fighting during the 1992 conflict and the Second World War. Set at a crossroads of routes near the capital, Anenii Noi district combines an agricultural vocation with continually growing tourist and wine-making potential, being one of the dynamic areas of the country's centre.
