Parcul „Mihai Eminescu”

Parcul „Mihai Eminescu" is the central green space of the town of Strășeni, roughly 25 km north-west of Chișinău. An ordinary town park in the best sense: shaded paths, benches, play areas and plenty of local foot traffic, especially in the evening and at weekends. It is not a sight you make a special journey for, but it works very well as a break on a route towards the Codri forests or the region's wineries — street parking, free access, open round the clock.

Strășeni is the first substantial town you meet on leaving Chișinău to the north-west, and the park named after Mihai Eminescu is where the town's public life gathers. It is a neighbourhood park and a town-centre park at the same time: it makes no claim to being a tourist attraction, but it offers exactly what you want on the road — shade, a bench and ten minutes of quiet.

The park is laid out around asphalt and gravel paths, lined with mature trees that give good shade in summer. There are benches, play areas for children and open spaces where locals walk in the evening. The rhythm of the place changes a great deal with the hour: in the morning it is empty and quiet, in the afternoon it becomes the town's meeting point. Getting there

The park is on Strada Mihai Eminescu, in the central part of town. Strășeni is roughly 25 km from Chișinău, on the road towards Călărași and Ungheni — around 30–40 minutes by car, and the town is also served by regular public transport routes and by rail. Parking is on the adjacent streets. The park entrance is accessible to wheelchair users, though there is no specially laid-out parking. When to go

Being open round the clock and free of charge, the park can be visited at any time. It looks its best from May to October, when the vegetation is thick and the evenings are long. It remains usable in winter, but the paths can be snowed over. Weekends bring the most local activity.

Good to know

A typical stop takes 20–40 minutes; this is not a place where you spend half a day.
It suits children and has a wheelchair-accessible entrance.
Don't count on services inside the park — buy water and snacks in town.
Strășeni sits on the edge of the Codri forests, so the stop combines naturally with a route through the region's nature.
The area is one of the country's best for winery visits, and there are also restaurants in town for lunch.

Chateau Cojușna is at Cojușna, a few kilometres west of Chișinău, in an area reachable in under half an hour from the centre of the capital. It belongs to the category of wineries that have developed their own tourist infrastructure, designed for groups and for visits that include a meal. It is open every day, from 11:00 to 23:00, has free parking, and both the entrance and the parking are adapted for people with disabilities — a notable exception among Moldovan wineries. Dogs are not admitted. A logical choice for those in Chișinău without a car or short on time, but who still want a full winery visit.

Vinăria Romănești, also known by the company name Basvinex, is in the village of Romănești, in the hilly Codru area of central Moldova. The name of the village is one of the weightier ones in the winegrowing history of the region, and the surrounding vineyards are part of the area's classic landscape. The winery has no published hours and no website of its own, and the small number of recorded visitors indicates a producer who receives guests selectively, by prior arrangement. Contact well in advance is essential. Suited to visitors who put together their own route and accept a degree of improvisation in exchange for a place still untouched by mass tourism.
