Unguri-Holoșnița

A natural area in the north of the Republic of Moldova, in Ocnița district, close to the bank of the Dniester. It is a territory of relief and vegetation, without visiting infrastructure, suited to free hiking in a little-frequented area.

Unguri-Holoșnița is a natural area in the north of the Republic of Moldova, in Ocnița district, near the bank of the Dniester and the country's northern border. In public records it figures as a landform and natural area, not as a developed tourist site — a nuance that says, in fact, everything you need to know before setting off.

It is one of the least frequented areas in the country. That is both the advantage and the difficulty: you share the landscape with no one, but neither is there anyone on site to ask.

What you should know beforehand

Verifiable public information about this site is very scarce. There are no visiting hours, no fee, no entry point and no officially documented marked trails. We will invent here neither areas, nor species, nor routes — if you find such details in other sources, treat them with caution and check them locally.

In practice, a visit means free hiking in a northern landscape: travelling by car to the nearby settlements and walking from there. There is no laid-out parking, information point, toilets or assistance of any form.

Preparing the visit

A few rules that count for more here than elsewhere:

Save the map offline. Mobile network coverage in the rural north is uneven, and the area is close to the border.
Do not go alone if you intend to move away from the road.
Set off early. You want to finish the hike well before dark, because the drive back on secondary roads at night is the bad part of the day.
Take water and food. There is no supply point anywhere on the route.
Being an area close to the border, respect the local signs and instructions.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the best periods: moderate temperatures, good visibility and vegetation that does not block your way. In summer the area is dry and hot, and in winter the secondary roads of the north become unreliable, especially after snow or rain.

How it fits into a route

It is not a site for which one sets out from the capital specially. It makes sense as an extension of a northern route — most naturally, one built around the town of Soroca and the Dniester bank, with a night spent in the north.
