Nistrul de Jos

What exactly we are talking about

"Nistrul de Jos" designates the area of the river's lower course, before it approaches its mouth: a landscape of floodplain, water channels, low banks and flood meadows. The territory is divided between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, and the name is used in records on both sides of the border — including for a national park located on Ukrainian territory, in the Odesa region.

We mention this because public sources frequently confuse the two realities. If you build your itinerary on the basis of a quick search on a map, check which side of the border the point you have saved lies on — the difference means a border crossing, documents and an altogether different kind of journey.

What you see on the ground

It is a horizontal landscape, dominated by water and low vegetation: channels, canals, reed beds, meadows. It has no spectacular relief like the gorges at Saharna, nor any cliffs — the appeal is of a different kind. Wetlands of this sort are, in general, the richest in birds in the whole country, which is why they are sought out above all by birdwatchers and photographers.

We will not list here species or figures that we cannot confirm from verified sources. What can be said with certainty is that the visit involves open terrain, damp in places, without consistent shade.

How it is visited

On the Moldovan side there is no organised tourist infrastructure in the usual sense: do not count on a visitor centre, marked trails or built observation points. You travel by car to the settlements on the riverbank, and from there on foot.

Equipment matters more here than at other sites: waterproof footwear, sun protection, water and insect protection. Binoculars are the one item that genuinely changes the quality of the visit.

When to go

Spring and early autumn are the good windows — both for the temperatures and for the activity on the water. In summer the area is hot and exposed, without shade; in the middle of the day it becomes uncomfortable. Periods of heavy rain can make the unsurfaced access roads along the banks impassable.
