What Saharna is

The Holy Trinity monastery at Saharna was founded in 1776 and is today one of the largest pilgrimage centres in the Republic of Moldova. It lies about 97 km from Chișinău, roughly one hour and fifty minutes by car, in the gorge of the river Saharna, close to the Dniester.

What makes the place special is not the monastery alone but the combination: an active monastic complex, a wooded gorge with marked trails, a waterfall of approximately 4 metres and the cavity known locally as the "Gypsy's Pit". It is the only place in the country where a major religious site and a nature reserve overlap so closely — Google itself classifies the point simultaneously as a place of worship and a nature reserve.

What you see there

The lower complex, down in the valley, is the part most people visit: the churches, the cells, the courtyard, the spring. From here the paths set off towards the upper part of the gorge, where you reach the old cave hermitage carved into the rock and the viewpoints over the valley.

The waterfall is the feature that draws the most secular visitors. At approximately 4 metres, it is not spectacular in size, but the setting — limestone walls, clear water, forest — makes the few hundred metres of trail worth it. Flow depends on the season: in spring and after rain it is visibly stronger than in August.

Getting there

From Chișinău it is about 97 km to the north-east, in the direction of Rezina. The road is passable in any car and the final stretch into the complex is accessible. The monastery opens very early, around 05:30 on most days, and closes in the evening. The schedule varies from day to day because it follows the services, so check in advance if you are aiming for a particular hour.

What you should know beforehand

Saharna is far more accessible than Țipova. You can see the lower part of the complex with no physical effort at all. The difference appears if you climb the paths towards the waterfall and the upper viewpoints: there you need shoes with grippy soles, and in rain the earth sections become slippery.

Inside the grounds the usual rules for an active place of worship apply: shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women when entering the church, a low voice, phone on silent. Photography outside is unrestricted; inside, avoid flash and do not photograph during the service or worshippers at prayer.

On feast days the influx of pilgrims is heavy and the car park fills early. If you want quiet, choose a weekday morning.

There is no entrance fee.

What to combine it with on the same day

Saharna and Țipova are about 35 km apart, roughly 40 minutes' drive, and can be seen on the same day — this is the classic pairing for the Dniester bank. Recommended order: Țipova in the morning, while you are fresh for the descent and the climb, Saharna in the afternoon. If you continue north, Soroca is the natural extension of the route.
