Which is the best spring month for a visit to Moldova?

May. The vegetation is at its peak, temperatures are comfortable for walking at sites such as Orheiul Vechi or Țipova, and the wineries receive smaller groups than in the autumn season.

When do the orchards blossom?

There is no fixed date — it depends on the year, the species and the area. A reasonable window to watch is the second half of April, with apricot and cherry the first to flower. If it is the main reason for your trip, check the situation one or two weeks ahead.

The tradition of the red-and-white thread worn on the chest from 1 March, as a sign of the coming of spring. It is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage and is actively lived in Moldova, not merely presented to tourists. The "Mărțișor" music festival in Chișinău runs from 1 to 12 March.

A festival of opera and classical music performed in the open air at Orheiul Vechi, in mid-June, with the Răut gorge as its setting. The exact dates and programme are announced annually, and accommodation in the area is limited, so many people come from Chișinău the same evening.

Is it worth coming in spring if I am interested in wine?

Yes, but with one reservation: you will not catch the harvest and the winemaking atmosphere, which belong to autumn. In exchange, tastings are more personal, groups are smaller and appointments are easier to arrange.

Moldova in Spring: April to June

Almost everybody comes to Moldova in autumn. There is logic to it: it is harvest time, the wineries are at full tilt, and the events calendar is busy. The drawback is that everybody else thinks the same — tasting groups are large, and bookings have to be made weeks ahead.

Spring is the other option, and it is the one few people consider. The landscape is just as good, if not better, and the ratio between what you see and what the organising costs you is clearly in its favour.

March: the season opens with Mărțișor

It is not yet travel season in the classic sense — the weather is unsettled, and in some years snow still appears — but March opens the cultural calendar.

Mărțișor, on 1 March, is the month's most visible tradition. The red-and-white thread is worn on the chest and given as a token of welcome to spring. The tradition is recognised by UNESCO as an element of intangible cultural heritage, in a joint file with other countries in the region. In Moldova it is lived seriously, not as shop-window folklore: on 1 March, everybody wears a mărțișor, from children to office workers.

The "Mărțișor" Festival in Chișinău, which runs from 1 to 12 March, is the month's main music event. It has a long history and a programme combining classical music, folk and contemporary projects, in several halls in the capital. The programme is announced shortly before each edition — do not count on information published months in advance.

Also in March comes the Mileștii Mici Wine Run, a race run inside the winery's underground galleries. It is a strange idea and that is exactly why it works: you run several kilometres through limestone tunnels, at a constant temperature, among the bottles. Places are limited and go quickly. April: the orchards

This is where the visual part begins. Moldova is a country of orchards — apple, plum, cherry, apricot — and the blossom turns the central and northern hills into a landscape you will see in no other month.

There is no fixed date. The moment depends on the year, on the altitude and on the species: apricot and cherry blossom first, apple later. A reasonable window to watch is the second half of April, but in warm years it moves earlier and in cold ones later. Areas where the effect is strongest:

The hills in the centre of the country, between Chișinău and Călărași
The Codri area, where orchard alternates with forest
The north, towards Soroca, where the areas are large and the landscape more open

April is also the month when the vines start into growth — not visually spectacular yet, but at the wineries you can feel that the season has begun.

May: the best month

If you had to choose a single month for a first visit, May is the answer.

The reasons:

The vegetation is at its peak, but has not yet dried out under the summer sun. The green is the real one, not the dusty green of August.
Temperatures are comfortable for walking. That counts enormously at sites such as Țipova, where you have to go down and back up a path, or Orheiul Vechi, where you move around a great deal in the open.
The wineries are open and receive small groups. Outside the peak season, tastings are more personal and you have a better chance of talking to somebody who actually knows what they are pouring. See the options in the wineries and wines section.
Accommodation is easier to find than in September–October.

May is also when the terraces start to open in Chișinău, and the city changes its rhythm completely. The parks fill up in the evening, and the central area becomes much more pleasant to walk.

June: DescOPERĂ at Orheiul Vechi

In mid-June, Orheiul Vechi hosts DescOPERĂ — a festival of opera and classical music performed in the open air, in the Răut gorge, with the cliffs as a backdrop. As a setting, it is one of the finest contexts for a performance anywhere in the region.

What you need to know:

The programme and exact dates are announced annually, a few months in advance. Do not assume that the current year's edition keeps the previous one's format.
It is held outdoors. Take clothes for the evening — after sunset it cools noticeably in the gorge — and something to sit on if the seating is not chairs.
Accommodation in the area is limited. Many people come from Chișinău the same evening, which means traffic on the way out. Alternatively, there are guesthouses in the nearby villages, but they book up early. See what can be found under accommodation.

June is also the last month in which the heat is still reasonable. From July, the south of the country becomes demanding at midday.

What does not work in spring

To be fair:

You do not see the harvest. The vendemmia, the winemaking, the energy at the wineries in full season — all of that belongs to autumn.
The weather is unsettled in March and April. You can get three days of sun or a week of cold rain. Take layers.
Some seasonal sites open later. Soroca Fortress, for instance, operates from spring until November and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays — check before doing 154 km for nothing.
Secondary roads can be muddy after rain, especially the access roads to the forest monasteries.

How to build your visit

A simple framework, for three or four days in May:

Day 1: Chișinău — the centre, the museums, the markets. In the evening, a restaurant in the city.
Day 2: a large winery in the morning and a small one in the afternoon, bearing in mind that they are not all in the same direction. The wine tour guide explains the geographical logic.
Day 3: Orheiul Vechi, with real time there, not a 40-minute stop.
Day 4: either the north, towards Soroca, or the Codru monasteries.

Spring is not the obvious season. That is exactly why it is worth it.
